Understanding Insurance Deductibles

What a deductible is, the common types, and where to find yours.

Editorial status: draft — awaiting expert review. General information only.

What a deductible is

A deductible is the portion of a covered loss you are responsible for before insurance pays.

Flat vs. percentage deductibles

Some deductibles are a fixed dollar amount. Others — common for wind, hail or hurricane — are a percentage of the dwelling coverage limit, which can be much larger than people expect.

Where to find yours

Your declarations page lists deductibles. If anything is unclear, ask your agent or insurer to explain it in writing.

This guide is general educational information, not insurance, legal or financial advice. Your policy, insurer and state rules determine what applies to your situation.
